This year Southland ISD's school board has graciously approved several much-needed school renovations.

The first major change was the replacing of the carpet with brand new red, black, and white tiles.  The tiles are laid in a random pattern across all classrooms, the cafeteria, and the hallway.  The tile replaced a dull blue carpet and has given the school a bright new facelift.

To complement the tile are brand new lockers.  The lockers were installed around October of 2007 and give the students a great place to keep their books and belongings organized.  The shiny new lockers replaced the older and unreliable lockers from last year.  In an effort to keep the lockers in new condition, students are not allowed to tape anything, inside or out, on their assigned locker.

The grounds and maintenance crew at Southland has been busy changing the landscape of Southland ISD.  New grass was planted in the front part of the school, and a bricked, enclosed flowerbed  replanted with colorful pansies that are bright in bloom this Spring.  Sidewalks have been included to offer a walkway without disrupting the growth of the grass, and the flagpole was removed and placed near the original entrance of the high school.  The efforts have been headed by Rick Cardona, Tommy Gentry, and Gerald Edwards.

Citizens Bank of Slaton donated two new scoreboards for the Eagles and Lady Eagles basketball teams. The larger scoreboard is placed on the west side of the gym, and a smaller one is hanging on the east side.  The Scoreboards are black and have a picture of an eagle on both sides.  The scoreboards replace an older, less reliable one that had been used for the past several years.

During the summer of 2008, the gym floor and locker room floors will be refurbished.  A new hardwood floor will replace the old one in the gym, and the concrete floor in the locker rooms will be sanded, rebuffed, and coated with a sealant.

The ITV lab was updated with four new flat screen television in February 2008.  The new 42" televisions offer state-of-the-art technology to a handful of Southland students taking college courses through ITV from South Plains College.
The old portable buildings from last year were replaced with 4 brand new ones.  The new portables are nicely equipped with bathrooms and their own air conditioning and heating units.  Each portable holds two classes that are adjoined by a common door.  The administration building was also moved to a new portable and is the new office of our superintendent and business manager.  New ramps and stairs were installed for easier access to the portables, and  new sidewalks were poured, providing a cleaner, more concise walkway from the portables to the main school building.
